The car insurance quote, Northern Ireland and suitable deals

It may be that you gave up trying to get a competitive car insurance quote Northern Ireland, some years back.

Perhaps you found it difficult, time consuming and ultimately fruitless – as a result, you may have been sticking with your existing cover simply because it is the path of least resistance:

  • this may no longer be necessary;

  • the fact is that over recent years, the situation for various forms of Northern Ireland insurance has changed out of all recognition;

  • not only is it now typically easier to obtain a car insurance quote, Northern Ireland options have also increased due to the fact that more and more insurers are offering their products here (after many decades when choice was limited);

  • that increased choice may also help in terms of achieving more cost-attractive solutions to your car insurance needs;

  • of course, things are not entirely yet totally comparable to the insurance situation elsewhere and it may still be something of a frustration trying to find the specific insurers that do now operate in our marketplace;

  • there are web sites available though, which have done some of the hard work for you – they may contain consolidated information relating to insurers selling car insurance into Northern Ireland;

  • using these sites may allow you to quickly and productively gain access to other quotations and to get hold of something that you may be able to use to compare against your existing car insurance cover;

  • of course, it may be advisable to avoid being too focused, initially, on the price of the quotations you see – it may be a more sensible approach to compare the quality of the cover first, as there may be little point in obtaining more cost-attractive cover if it does not provide you with the financial protection you need;

I can’t afford motorbike insurance: Northern Ireland prices are too high!

Here are a few thoughts relating to motorbike insurance, Northern Ireland and your finances:

  • if you decide you cannot afford motorbike insurance, Northern Ireland is no different from anywhere else in the sense that you will only have two alternatives – to not own/ride a bike or the hopefully unacceptable option of deciding that you’ll ride it uninsured and therefore, illegally;

  • in spite of what you may believe, there is today far more choice available for various forms of Northern Ireland road insurance, than has been the case for a long time;

  • some people make choices and decisions that unnecessarily inflate the cost of their cover – a few examples are provided below;

  • affording a large and powerful bike is only half of the battle because you’ve also got to pay for the insurance on it – depending upon your individual circumstances, you may find the insurance cost to be considerably less of a burden if you drive a more modest and less ambitious machine;

  • whether you’re talking about motorcycles, cars, vans or HGVs, insurers typically do not like to think that the policyholder is a reckless driver and if they do, the premiums will accordingly reflect their concerns – so be sensible, drive conservatively and try to avoid convictions and licence points;

  • as you may know, theft and vandalism are typically an ever-present threat for a good bike and anything you can do to reduce those risks may be well received by insurers and rewarded with lower premiums – examples might include garaging your bike overnight (or parking it on a driveway) and fitting additional security devices;

  • statistically, for motorbike insurance, Northern Ireland providers of cover may see a relationship between higher annual mileages and higher probabilities of an accident; so, if you keep your mileages down you may also see your premiums heading in the same direction.

Insurance, Northern Ireland and your motor vehicle

For insurance, including car insurance, Northern Ireland now offers opportunities for both choice and influencing the amount you have to pay for your policy.

In terms of insurance, Northern Ireland policies may now be more susceptible to cost reducing measures such as:

  • the cost of insurance for people with ‘clean licences’ is typically lower than for those with multiple penalty points – so working hard to keep your licence clean, makes sense in financial terms;
  • cars parked on the street are typically more at risk than those parked on a driveway or in a garage, so if you can, get yours off the road when it is not in use;
  • insurance providers are not ‘anti’ young people or inexperienced drivers, however, they do need to recognise them as being typically higher-risk drivers and therefore will typically charge them a higher premium – so avoiding including them on your policy may be something you wish to think about, unless you have absolutely no alternative;
  • one of the larger factors behind the calculation of your premium will be the nature of the vehicle itself – selecting that very large and powerful vehicle might be the stuff of your dreams but remember that it will have a knock-on effect on the cost of your insurance, which may soar for particularly powerful and expensive models;
  • some insurers are not comfortable with vehicles that have been heavily modified/customised to the extent that the basic details of the car have been changed (examples might include fitting new axles or supercharged engines etc) and once again that may lead to much higher premiums;
  • for car insurance, Northern Ireland quotations and supporting documentation may typically highlight further opportunities for reducing your premium – which is one reason why it is important to read all of the policy documentation carefully, before you make a final decision.

Looking for cheap car insurance – Northern Ireland considerations

If you are looking for cheap car insurance, Northern Ireland is no different to anywhere else in several important respects.

The first of these is the sheer impact that the word ‘cheap’ can have on a reader.

Here, as elsewhere, recent times have been tough, financially speaking, leading to an increased emphasis on saving money. Given that comparatively few people enjoy spending money on insurance, anything that appears to offer cheap car insurance is going to catch the eye.

In terms of thinking critically about cheap car insurance, Northern Ireland, as a location, does not change the game.

You may find that the following typically apply here as elsewhere:

  • what is cheap for one person may not be cheap for you – your individual circumstances should dictate the cover that is suitable for you rather than what an advertisement tells you is ‘cheap’;
  • by reading a policy carefully (typically as part of the quotation process) you may find that some policies provide you with the cover you require and at a price you consider to be reasonable – that may, for you, be a definition of ‘cheap at the price’;
  • it may not matter how low-cost a policy is, if its cover is limited or its terms and conditions extremely restrictive, then in the event of a claim, you may suddenly find that the policy proves to be very expensive indeed;
  • a policy that initially appears to be more expensive than another may, in fact, prove to be less expensive once opportunities for discounts have been taken into account.

For cheap car insurance, Northern Ireland is no longer the wilderness that it once was. There is now greater choice and that is having a positive effect on price reductions, however, some of the above caution needs to be taken into account when looking at quotations.

If you want car insurance, Northern Ireland now offers choice

For car insurance, Northern Ireland is becoming increasingly like elsewhere in terms of the choice it offers.

Previous positions

Of course, historically the unique position of Northern Ireland meant that choice in car insurance wasn’t anything to speak of – in fact, in some cases, it may have been non-existent.

Anyone other than the very youngest and newest of drivers will remember those days and be glad that things are starting to change.

Today there are the beginnings of normality in the insurance marketplace with increasing numbers of car insurance policies becoming available.

Reality

Things though, are not entirely the same as elsewhere – at least not yet.

For a start, there are still insurers that do not offer their car insurance policies into Northern Ireland. Those that do are perhaps not always easily found if you simply start a sequential internet search of insurer by insurer trying to spot those that won’t refuse you once they see your postcode.

It also has to be recognised that even those insurers that are now operating here, still see Northern Ireland as a higher risk area. It may take some years before that perception is addressed.

Evolution

Notwithstanding all that, for car insurance, Northern Ireland is now offering increased choice and that is helping to bring prices down.

You can participate in this changing environment without needing to spend huge chunks of your time on the internet. That’s because there are now specialist sites that contain lists of insurance providers known to be offering products in Northern Ireland.

Those sites may not only save you time but by allowing you to go directly to known providers, they may facilitate your access to some of the suitable deals around.

For car insurance, Northern Ireland is becoming increasingly fertile ground. That just has to be good news for the driver-consumer.

Insurance, Northern Ireland and cars

In terms of insurance, Northern Ireland residents haven’t always had too much to cheer about.

The lack of choice and high prices were, for many of us, depressing and frustrating.

That was a pity because drivers here are no different to anywhere else. You probably want the most suitable cover you can find and at the most cost-effective price just as any other driver does wherever they may live.

For insurance, Northern Ireland was something of a desert in terms of choice and that position remained the norm for many years.

Fortunately, times change.

Today if you’re looking for car insurance, you’ll be able to find an increasing level of choice due to the fact that more insurance providers are coming back into our market.

Online you’ll typically be able to find sites that list the insurance providers currently selling their policies here and you may finally be able to experience real choice.

One of the strange consequences for Northern Ireland drivers arising from this increased choice is that it means we may have to re-discover some of those old ‘lost skills’. They are the things that can help obtain lower premiums by thinking about your usage.

For example:

  • insurers like to see responsible attitudes towards security so using security devices and parking your car off-road may be rewarded with reduced premiums;
  • you may see similar discounts advanced for things such as being a member of a motoring organisation;
  • if you add very young or inexperienced drivers to your policy, you may find that some insurers will significantly increase their premiums;
  • if you fundamentally change the chassis or engine of a car (e.g. major customisation) you may find that your premiums increase again.

So, for choice in car insurance, Northern Ireland is improving rapidly. Most drivers here will see that as a major good news item.
